Color of the Week: Hot Stuff Pink

The Crack

It's very alarming when your step-son comes home on leave from the Air Force and the first thing he says to your mother-in-law when he sees her is "Grandma, thank you so much for The Crack you sent me. All the guys loved it. I'd really like to take some more of The Crack back to the base with me."

My kids love The Crack. I think it's really called White Trash or Dish Pan Candy or something like that. We call it The Crack because it is so addicting (and the word "The" is always included). My m-i-l shared her recipe with me and I made some this morning. Yup, I'm hooked. When you call the TV show Intervention to come save me, please have them send Candy Finnigan as my interventionist. That would be just so appropriate.

The Crack

4 cups Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Cereal

2 cups Rice Crispies cereal

2- 12oz bags white chocolate chips or 1 lb white almond bark

1 cup roasted whole almonds (salted)

2 cups pecans- either whole or large pieces (toast in oven for a few minutes)

Line 2 or 3 cookie sheets with wax paper or foil. Pour cereals and nuts in large bowl. Melt chips or bark according to package directions. Pour melted white chocolate over cereals and nuts and mix well. Coat all pieces and then pour mixture on cookie sheets. Spread into one layer and let cool and chocolate will harden. Break into chunks and store in air tight containers.

Hide your own stash well.

Historical or Hysterical?

I have plans to drag out my sewing machine and start creating with fabric again. I ordered a neat little folding table from here that I can leave up in the study rather than set up (and then take down) all my stuff on the dining room table like I usually do.


Anyway, back to my story for today. I went to the fabric store yesterday to look for patterns. Probably will start back sewing with a simple tote bag as I have some natural linen and a vintage cotton that will look great together in this Amy Butler sort of way. Or maybe something like this soft little baby doll in a bag from Turkey Feathers.



OK Back to my story. Again. So while I was looking through the pattern books, I came across this collection from Simplicity in the costumes section of their Fall book. Called the Historical Costume Collection, they have patterns for 7 different eras- from the Renaissance to the Late 19th Century. The sewing looks pretty elaborate (how to they get the hips to puff out like that? Do they still sell crinolines or whatever that slip thing was?) and here are a few of my favs:











OK, where do you buy a wig like that? It's really the hair that pulls this look off.

Whoa, that's a lot of taffeta.














My favorite. It reminds me of drapes. Sort of what Scarlett did in GWTW. Although I think that was a little number in green.














And of course, they have a pattern for sewing your own undergarments. Still no explanation of the hip thing. Not that I really need any extra poufiness there anyway!

Goodwilling

I forgot how much I love thrifting. I had a few minutes today and decided to stop by our local Goodwill. I hadn't been in such a long time and was so glad I stopped as this is what I found. A terrific sewing basket in a great color combination. Great retro styling (is it retro if it's original?) and all for $5.99. What a deal!

Color of the Week: Orange Crush

Killing Them Softly

We have ants in our kitchen. Yuck.

Those tiny little ghost ants that appear out of nowhere and just take over everything. Probably driven indoors by the high water from Fay. Thanks a lot, Fay.

Until the Mister can get in touch with the exterminators tomorrow, I have found a successful line of defense. Literally a line. I squirted Soft Scrub with bleach along the edges of the countertop and smeared with a sponge and left to dry. Nothing has crossed that line and my kitchen smells fresh and clean!

Can you imagine being able to dance like this? I am so horrid at dancing but I love watching.
